Preparation for the Grave (In the Light of Hadith)

Prepare for the grave:

“Barā’ رضي الله عنه narrates: We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at a جنازہ (funeral). He sat at the edge of the grave and began to weep until the soil became wet with his tears. Then he ﷺ said: ‘O my brothers! Prepare yourselves for this.’” (Sunan Ibn Majah)

People will be tested in the graves like the trial of Dajjal:

“Asma bint Abi Bakr رضي الله عنها narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Revelation has come to me that you will be tested in your graves like, or nearly like, the trial of the Dajjal.’”
(The narrator said: I do not know which word Asma رضي الله عنها used—‘like the trial of Dajjal’ or ‘close to the trial of Dajjal’.) (Sahih al-Bukhari)

“‘A’ishah رضي الله عنها narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to seek refuge from the punishment of the grave and from the trial of Dajjal, and he ﷺ would say: ‘You will indeed be tested in your graves.’” (Sunan an-Nasai)

Seek refuge from the punishment of the grave:

“‘A’ishah رضي الله عنها narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to supplicate:
‘O Allah! Lord of Jibril, Mika’il, and Israfil (peace be upon them), I seek refuge in You from the heat of the Fire and from the punishment of the grave.’” (Sunan an-Nasai)

If people were to witness the punishment of the grave:

“Anas رضي الله عنه narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
‘If I did not fear that you would stop burying your dead, I would have supplicated to Allah to make you hear the punishment of the grave.’” (Sahih Muslim)

No place is more terrifying than the grave:

“‘Uthman رضي الله عنه said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘I have not seen any scene more frightening and severe than the grave.’” (Jami at-Tirmidhi)

If people knew the reality of the grave:

“Abu Dharr رضي الله عنه narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
‘I see what you do not see and I hear what you do not hear. The heaven has creaked, and it has the right to creak. By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, there is not even a space of four fingers in the sky except that an angel is placing his forehead in prostration before Allah. If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much; you would not enjoy your wives on your beds, and you would go out to the open fields seeking refuge with Allah.’

The narrator Abu Dharr رضي الله عنه said: ‘I wish I were a tree that would be cut down.’” (Sunan Ibn Majah)
