Condition of Bodies in the Graves (In the Light of Hadith)

The bodies of the Prophets remain preserved in their graves until the Day of Judgment

“Awss ibn Aws رضي الله عنه narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The best of your days is Friday. On this day Adam عليه السلام was created, on this day his soul was taken, on this day the Trumpet will be blown, and on this day resurrection will occur. Therefore, send abundant blessings upon me on this day, for your blessings are presented before me.”
The Companions رضي الله عنهم said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, how will our blessings be presented to you when your blessed body will have decayed in the earth?
He ﷺ said: Allah has made the bodies of the Prophets forbidden for the earth.”
(Sunan Abu Dawud)

Allah preserves the bodies of certain Awliya, righteous people, and martyrs from decay

“Hisham ibn ‘Urwah رحمة الله عليه narrates from his father that during the time of Walid ibn ‘Abd al-Malik, when the wall of the blessed chamber of ‘A’ishah رضي الله عنها collapsed and it was being rebuilt, a foot appeared. People became alarmed and thought it was the blessed foot of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. There was no one present who could identify the foot with certainty until ‘Urwah ibn al-Zubayr رضي الله عنهما said: By Allah, this is not the foot of the Prophet ﷺ; rather, it is the foot of ‘Umar رضي الله عنه.”

For ordinary people, the entire body decays except the spinal bone

“Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The whole human body decays in the earth except for one bone; it is the spinal bone. From it, a person will be recreated on the Day of Judgment.”
(Sunan Ibn Majah)

Regarding the life of martyrs after death, a narration is mentioned in Muwatta Imam Malik رحمة الله عليه: ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Abu Sa‘sa‘ah رحمة الله عليه narrates that ‘Amr ibn al-Jamuh رضي الله عنه and ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr al-Ansari al-Salmi رضي الله عنه were both martyred in the Battle of Uhud. Floodwaters exposed their grave, and it was feared that it would be washed away. Both were buried in the same grave. When the grave was opened to move them elsewhere, no change was observed in their bodies. It appeared as though they had been martyred only the day before. One of them had placed his hand over his wound at the time of injury. When people attempted to move his hand while re-burying him, it returned to the same position over the wound. This incident occurred forty-six years after the Battle of Uhud.

In earlier discussions, the hardships of death were described. However, martyrs are people of such elevated rank that, by the command of Allah, they are protected from the pain of death and continue to receive provision even after passing away. May Allah grant us the death of martyrdom as well. Ameen.
