Rulings of Visiting the Sick (1) (In the Light of Hadith)

Visiting a sick Muslim is his right

“Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Five rights are due from one Muslim to another: returning the greeting of Salam, visiting the sick, following the جنازة (funeral procession), accepting invitations, and responding to the one who sneezes.’” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

Virtue of Visiting the Sick

“Sayyiduna Thawban رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘When a Muslim visits his Muslim brother (who is ill), he remains in the fruits of Jannah (Paradise) until he returns.’” (Sahih Muslim)

“Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Allah will say on the Day of Resurrection: O son of Adam, I was ill and you did not visit Me. He will say: O my Lord, how could I visit You while You are the Lord of the worlds? Allah will say: Did you not know that My servant so-and-so was ill and you did not visit him? Had you visited him, you would have found Me with him (i.e., My pleasure would have been attained there). O son of Adam, I asked you for food but you did not feed Me. He will say: O my Lord, how could I feed You while You are the Lord of the worlds? Allah will say: Did you not know that My servant asked you for food and you did not feed him? Had you fed him, you would have found Me with him. O son of Adam, I asked you for water but you did not give Me to drink. He will say: O my Lord, how could I give You drink while You are the Lord of the worlds? Allah will say: My servant asked you for water and you did not give him to drink; had you given him water, you would have found Me with him.’” (Sahih Muslim)

“Sayyiduna ‘Ali رضي الله عنه narrated: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘When a Muslim visits another Muslim in the morning, seventy thousand angels supplicate for him until evening; and if he visits him in the evening, seventy thousand angels supplicate for him until morning, and he will have a garden in Jannah.’” (Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, Sunan Abu Dawud)

“Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘When a person visits a sick individual, a caller from the heavens announces: May you be blessed, your walking is good, and you have secured for yourself a lofty منزل in Jannah.’” (Sunan Ibn Majah)

“Sayyiduna Anas رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Whoever performs wudu, performs it well, and visits his Muslim brother seeking reward, will be kept away from Hellfire by the distance of sixty years.’” (Sunan Abu Dawud)
