Supplications for Seeking Protection from Trials

(In the Light of Ḥadīth)

To seek protection from the trials of life and death, the following supplications should be recited:

    ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to supplicate in prayer (after sending blessings upon the Prophet):
    “Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min ʿadhābi al-qabr, wa aʿūdhu bika min fitnati al-Masīḥ al-Dajjāl, wa aʿūdhu bika min fitnati al-maḥyā wa al-mamāt, Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika mina al-maʾtham wa al-maghram.”
    “O Allah! I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, from the trial of the False Messiah (Dajjāl), from the trials of life and death, and from sin and debt.”
    (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)

Supplication for protection from worldly trials:

    Saʿd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from his father that he used to teach them five supplications, saying that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say:
    “Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika mina al-bukhl, wa aʿūdhu bika mina al-jubn, wa aʿūdhu bika an uradda ilā arḏali al-ʿumur, wa aʿūdhu bika min fitnati al-dunyā, wa aʿūdhu bika min ʿadhābi al-qabr.”
    “O Allah! I seek refuge in You from miserliness, from cowardice, from being returned to a feeble old age, from the trials of the world, and from the punishment of the grave.”
    (Sunan al-Nasāʾī)

Supplication for protection from the trial of the grave and the Fire:

    ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ frequently supplicated:
    “Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min fitnati al-nār wa ʿadhābi al-nār, wa fitnati al-qabr wa ʿadhābi al-qabr, wa sharri fitnati al-Masīḥ al-Dajjāl, wa sharri fitnati al-faqr, wa sharri fitnati al-ghinā.”
    “O Allah! I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Fire and its punishment, from the trial of the grave and its punishment, from the evil of the trial of Dajjāl, from the evil of poverty, and from the evil of wealth.”
    (Sunan al-Nasāʾī)

Supplication for protection from losing faith:

    Asmāʾ bint Abī Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “I will be at my Ḥawḍ (Cistern) waiting to see who comes to me. Some people will be taken away before reaching me. I will say: ‘They are from my Ummah.’ It will be said: ‘You do not know what they did after you; they turned back on their heels.’” The narrator Ibn Abī Mulaykah used to supplicate:
    “Allāhumma innā naʿūdhu bika an narjiʿa ʿalā aʿqābinā aw nuftan.”
    “O Allah! We seek refuge in You from turning back on our heels or being put into trials.”
