Jumu‘ah expiates minor sins committed during the week

Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Each prayer serves as expiation for the sins committed until the next prayer; Jumu‘ah until the following week; and Ramadan until the following year—provided that major sins are avoided.”
(Sahih Muslim)

Severe warning for those who abandon Jumu‘ah without excuse

‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud رضي الله عنه reported that the Prophet ﷺ said regarding those who do not attend Jumu‘ah:
“I intended to appoint someone to lead the prayer, then go and burn the houses of those who do not attend Jumu‘ah.”
(Sahih Muslim)

The heart is sealed for neglecting three Jumu‘ahs without valid reason

Abu al-Ja‘d al-Damri رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever neglects three Jumu‘ahs out of heedlessness, Allah places a seal upon his heart.”
(Sunan Abi Dawud, Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, Sunan al-Nasa’i, Sunan Ibn Majah)

Jumu‘ah is obligatory upon every Muslim except specific categories

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“There is no Jumu‘ah obligation upon a traveller.”
(al-Tabarani)

Tariq ibn Shihab رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Jumu‘ah in congregation is obligatory upon every Muslim except a slave, a woman, a child, and a sick person.”
(Sunan Abi Dawud)

Ghusl, Miswak, and fragrance on the day of Jumu‘ah are Sunnah

Abu Sa‘id رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Every adult Muslim should perform Ghusl on the day of Jumu‘ah, use Miswak, and apply whatever fragrance is available.”
(Sunan al-Nasa’i)

The Jumu‘ah sermon should be concise and the prayer longer

‘Ammar ibn Yasir رضي الله عنه reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
“The brevity of a man’s sermon and the length of his prayer is a sign of his understanding. Therefore, keep the sermon short and lengthen the prayer.”
(Sahih Muslim)

If drowsiness occurs during the sermon, one should change position

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever feels drowsy during Jumu‘ah should change his place.”
(Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi)

Speaking or being inattentive during the sermon is blameworthy

Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“If you say to your companion on Friday, ‘Be quiet,’ while the Imam is delivering the sermon, you have engaged in idle speech.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

Sitting with knees drawn up during the sermon is prohibited

Mu‘adh ibn Anas al-Juhani رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade sitting with one’s knees drawn up (hugging the legs) during the sermon.
